Smart Measurement Assisted Assembly Lines for large-scale structures (SMAAL)

Geometrical variation in manufacturing processes often propagates and accumulates, resulting in quality problems that are discovered late – causing waste and extra costs due to scraps, reworks and delays. Jigs systems are an important resource widely used in production lines to address this problem.

Industry 4.0 offers a wide-range of new possibilities in terms of digitalisation to upgrade traditional jigs into smart jigs, to develop waste-free processes. Nevertheless, the application of smart jigs to the assembly of large structures has been limited by the large size of the components involved, their major cost and the high quality requirements. This project aims to overcome those challenges by developing a smart measurement toolkit designed for measuring in real-time large-scale structures deformation and misalignment. The solution, based on advanced non-contact sensing systems, will be integrated into jigs and commercialized for aerospace and other manufacturing industries.
