Making data ecosystems accessible

Data are the new gold – yet an enormous amount of data remains unused. Security concerns, inadequate business models and lacking interoperability often prevent this usage.

LeOniDaS seeks to help SMEs overcome these hurdles. LeOniDaS promotes their participation in the Gaia-X-based data and service ecosystem Pontus-X with a regional interactive learning factories such as the TEC-Lab and FlowFactory at Institut für Produktionsmanagement, Technologie und Werkzeugmaschinen – PTW as well as a web-based onboarding tool for Pontus-X, reducing the effort required for this by 30%.

The research project builds on the foundation of a strong ecosystem of previous initiatives – including EuProGigant, DIONE-X, ESCOM, AMIDS and Flex4Res – ensuring that proven insights and practical approaches are carried forward and applied effectively. LeOniDaS continues this collaborative effort to strengthen data sovereignty and digital competence in industrial settings.

LeOniDaS is led by PTW and deltaDAO. The acronym LeOniDaS stands for interactive learning environment for onboarding in an industrial data and service ecosystem and is funded by the German Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF).

Background

The EU Data Act offers potential but also entails new obligations to companies. Since January 2024, it provides clear rules for data access and obliges manufacturers of connected products to provide usage data – a challenge for most companies.

Gaia-X-based data and service ecosystems such as Pontus-X address these challenges through secure, interoperable data exchange and new value creation opportunities. Nevertheless, low awareness, a lack of skills and complex onboarding processes – especially for SMEs – make participation difficult.
