This Summer School provides current or prospective PhD students with knowledge of smart manufacturing and the necessary skills, practical know-how, attitudes and values to meet the complex demands of the industry 4.0 environment. This is an opportunity for self-driven, ambitious PhD candidates to broaden their network with potential European partners and to boost their abilities and knowledge in advanced tools for the design, implementation, organisation, quality assessment and improvement of intelligent manufacturing systems.

The programme starts remotely on 16 September 2021 with workshops, where industrial partners pitch industrial challenges and students work collaboratively on solutions. During the “central week”, 28-30 September 2021, students will work together for eight hours of hacking time, with guidance from local mentors, as they seek to translate their innovation into a feasible business solution. The course includes lectures and hands-on training in: design thinking, proof of concept, ROS, levels of autonomy, etc.
Due to COVID19 restrictions the school will be held in “blended mode”, with some sessions online and students attending from their universities.

Applications are open to PhD candidates, scholars and students with a relevant background in innovation processes and sustainable manufacturing – as well as professionals from SMEs and people connected to smart manufacturing, including company employees and members of startups. The application deadline is 31 August 2021.
The EITM Doctoral Scientific and Industrial Committee (EITM DSIC) will review the application materials by 6 September 2021, using a competitive selection process based on the scientific excellency and the academic qualification of the applicants.
Selected participants will be contacted by the EIT Manufacturing Doctoral School office and asked to complete their enrolment. In case of withdrawals, candidates from the waiting list will be contacted to fill all available seats.
Selected students will have time until 9 September 2021 to accept the participation offer. Waiting list students will be informed by 10 September 2021 and must agree to participate by 14 September 2021 at the latest.
Standard fee: €500.
Fee for PhD Students, professionals from EIT Manufacturing partners and RIS students: €200.
No fee for: PhD Students and professional from SIC* members.
No fee for: RIS women PhD students.
