Displacing intensive manual labour towards human focused collaborative robots

Today, robots collaborating with humans can enable manufacturers to increase performance significantly by improving quality, speed and repeatability and achieving human well-being without replacing human workers. Automated production is currently well-established in structured and predictable environments such as mass production, but it is limited for complex and unpredictable manual operations.

For those operations, manufacturers increasingly need to overcome the shortage of resources due to the painfulness of work and ageing society. This project will develop an effective human-robotic system, unlocking the full robotic potential for precise, long-lasting manual operations on hard and inter-changeable products. The results, relying on the operators’ know-how to teach the task to the robot, will increase productivity and improve the quality of work by delegating painful tasks. It will restore manual job attractiveness, particularly in manufacturing industries, while reducing waste due to improved yield.
