Lightweighting initiatives across the transportation industries are introducing new materials and manufacturing processes into the design and manufacturing cycle, and engineers are challenged by having to work outside their comfort-zone while trying to adhere to zero-defects and zero-waste policies.
The trial-and-error approach has become totally obsolete. Although the Virtual Prototyping (VP) approach is proving to be a strong alternative, employers remain concerned about the additional challenge of keeping their workforce abreast of the new and fast-evolving technologies, processes and materials. This project uses industry-standard VP software packages to develop a self-contained course that provides a comprehensive introduction to lightweighting and associated processes and materials. It covers all essential aspects of the material behaviour during manufacturing and the impact of various process parameters, showing how to control them in order to achieve the best outcome.
