These multifunctional materials or metamaterials will also play a significant role in the coming years according to my expectation because this will allow us to do many things: on one hand, have systems that change shape, behaviour and performance depending on the conditions in response to the local environment. Usually, they’re inspired by a biological analog but they are designed to perform multiple things with a combination of different functional capabilities.”

Materials of this kind have tremendous potential to impact new system performance by reducing size, weight, cost, power consumption, and complexity while improving efficiency, safety, and versatility.
